Drone Insurance For Surveyors
Drones are being used more frequently in the surveying and mapping professions.
The advantages of using drones for surveys include:
- Surveying large scale agricultural areas, individual properties or hard to locate areas
- Reduces health and safety risks
- Provides crisper images and is environmentally friendly
- Can greatly reduce the time spent collecting accurate data
If you are planning to use a drone for commercial operations then it is compulsory to have public liability insurance and you do require permissions for commercial operations (PfCO) from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
At DRONE GUARD we provide specialist drone insurance for the surveying industry and surveyors using drones.
Liability insurance for surveyors
Our policy provides public liability specifically for drone operations which are usually excluded from many other survey insurance liability policies.
Public liability insurance will protect you from any potential third party claims for damage to property and bodily injury caused as a direct result of activities carried out by your business during drone activities.
If you incur any additional legal costs as a result of a claim and your business is liable then you will be covered.
Drone aviation liability extends your public liability section to include risks for war and allied perils. If you are operating a UAV commercially (i.e. you are receiving payment) then you will need to have this cover in place under the EU regulation (EC) 785/2004.
Drone hull insurance - insurance for surveyors
Whilst it is not compulsory to have drone damage cover it is recommend that you have this cover in place. Would your business suffer financially if a crash happened and you had to fund the repair or the replacement of a new drone?
If you have one drone or a fleet of drones we can provide cover.
Hull insurance also includes accidental damage, theft and reconstitution of data and reasonable costs for drone hire whilst being repaired. This means if your drone was damaged and the data is irretrievable, the cost of hiring a drone is covered enabling you to do another survey whilst your drone is out of action.
Why should I purchase drone liability insurance?
Our surveyors drone liability insurance policy is fully compliant with (EC) 785/2004 and the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
You can opt for a liability only policy which is compulsory but if you purchase the optional covers we are able to offer better discounts.
Our surveyors drone insurance policy is fully comprehensive and is underwritten by one of the leading aviation insurers in the world, Starr International (Europe) Limited.

Drone Spares and Equipment Cover
Extending cover to include drone spares and equipment; such as additional batteries would give your surveying business complete peace of mind in the event of a claim.
Payload is the equipment the drone is carrying. For surveying this can be anything from a high resolution camera to a LIDAR scanner to help you capture what you need. As a surveyor you will be using this expensive equipment regularly for surveys. Again it is not compulsory to have this cover but in the event of a claim it would ease the financial impact to your business in the event of a loss.
Worldwide cover is available as an optional extra should your practice conduct surveys overseas although some countries are excluded.
